Использует сжатие данных без потерь. Глубина цвета - 8 бит. Обладает хорошей передачей резких контурных переходов, возможностью хранения анимационных картинок и прозрачных участков изображения.
Наиболее распространенный в Internet графический формат. Позволяет хранить изображения, имеющие до 256 цветов, поддерживает прозрачность, анимацию, чересстрочную развертку, возможность сохранения в одном файле несколько изображений [http://www.webxpert.ru/slovar.html].

Формат GIF — один из наиболее распространенных форматов графических файлов, используемых для веб-дизайна. Существует две версии данного формата: 87а и 89а. Версия 89а поддерживает анимацию, т. е. несколько последовательно сменяющихся изображений в одном GIF-файле. Формат GIF89a также можно определить как чередующееся представление изображений.
